Involvement in village activities is still important to the current WI. Refreshments are made and served at annual carnivals and the village Arts Festival. Our historical walks and suppers are the most recent venture. All our visitors are amazed at the amount of history in a village they so often simply drive through! We have made story sacks for use in the village primary school and in 2009 we applied for and were awarded a Yorkshire Tea Community Bursary of £500. This was used to set up and run a cookery club in the school. It is still running today. So much has changed, in the growth of the village of Willington itself and in the lives and expectations of the ladies of the WI. (The purchase of an ash tray for the Presidents table would be inconceivable in todays society!) However, so many of the activities we enjoy today were also enjoyed by our members in 1946. We maybe dont make so much jam or attend lamp-shade making classes but our enthusiasm for the experiences provided within our WI continue to inspire us.
